Richard,
Let's not get carried away and let the truth get in the way of a good story. If we let this develope, we will have you on the ship through the 80's and still trying to poison the crew....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I wonder how many of you have developed an acquired taste for Chlorine. I thought I would bring a bottle of Chlorox to Brownsville.

Didn't a DDG get hit by groudfire? Which one was it, and did anyone get hurt or killed. I thought I had heard of one getting hit.

Goldsborough was hit in December 1972, Cochrane was on her way to Hong Kong when we made an abrupt 180 degree turn and brought the ship to best speed to return to the gun line. Goldy was hit between Tartar Checkout and MT 52, right over the after Chief's quarters, in the area of Repair 3. Most of the repair party was down in Ops berthing but 4 of the more senior members were in Aft Chiefs. I never got to see the damage but I understand there was a loss of life and some heroics by the crew trying to control the fire.

RE the taking fire video. i was there in '66 when we took fire off n vietnam one afternoon. we used to make gun runs toward the beach with one ddg and a dd with 5"/38 guns. believe the dd was there because it had more mounts aft. one day we had done our run and i was standing on the stbd bridge wing when i saw these big fish jumping in the water. about that time the spotter said "shipbuilder you are taking hostile fire" the rounds were coming right over the ship and landing a little longe. the co (cdr john addams) turned us back into the beach and the gun director was able to lock on the shore battery (manned by women, who we could here on the prc-10/25 radio) and we took it out with only five rounds of 5"/54. got a nice BZ from comseventhflt and eventually ship got first of her meritorius unit commendations.

Hey taklema113...thanks for sharing that bit of US Naval gunfire support history...I was once a gunner's mate on the Mighty Cochrane and take a great deal of pride in the effectiveness of her 5 inch guns, even unto the 80's....She's was always and most definitely battle worthy...regards, Sal
