The word on the bullnose in the early seventies was the Cochrane was the longest ship of its class by a few feet. Sounded good then, sounds good now.

I remember it as being the longest Adams Class DDG, hence the gold bullnose. I think someone told me that is was non intentional, just a screw up in the builders yard. Sonething like 4".

I'll bet Ken Keeler or Marv Hanks could help us out on this if we could get them to post occasionally. I seem to remember it as just a matter of a few inches also. Maybe an extra few inches might be worth painting gold after all.

I remember being told the longest of the class has her bullnose painted gold, I also understood Cochrane was 4 inches longer. It is true that size does matter!

In the turnover I had as the Weapons Officer, I was told by the previous Weps, to make sure the bullnose was always painted gold. The significance is attributable to the ship being the longest in her class. I understand Cochrane had that distinction to honor her namesake, Admiral Cochrane, who was a shipbuilder. At the end of my tour, I passed the information on to my relief. This was a turnover item among the Weps department heads.
